i was born in chicago in 1959. an avid skier, i attended the university of colorado where i studied journalism between trips to vail.
after graduating in 1980, i spent nearly a decade writing advertising for clients like kellogg's and volkswagon.
fulfilling a lifelong dream, i opened my eponymous store in 1988, where i lived, illegally, in the back with my dog, burrito, a mattress, and a microwave. in 1991, i moved the store to a small mall in los angeles and got an apartment.
in 1994, the northridge earthquake squished the store and i began designing journals to fill my empty shelves.
i closed the store in 1996 to focus on my manufacturing business. with my husband, then boyfriend, i bought a house and moved the business into the garage.
in 2000, i opened "front" a small store in front of my new factory located in an up and coming, but seedy, part of hollywood.
tired of having to compete for customers with transvestite hookers, in may 2002, the store and factory moved to third street. more tired of being asked what my business was a front for, i changed the name back to pamela barsky. today, the store exists only online.
now, sadly, divorced, i live on the west side of los angeles in a bitsy neutra house on a hill. i spend my time designing products, developing candy recipes for my new business, pamela barsky sweet, and watching the trees sway in the front yard.
